Oropharyngeal cancer occurs when cancer cells develop in the oropharynx tissues. It is mostly found in the head or the neck. This type of cancer is caused by various factors that include smoking, heavy consumption of alcohol, HPV infection or background history of head and neck cancer. This article highlights the different types of treatment that are offered when diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer like mouth surgery.
This involves the use of medicines to kill the cancer cells entirely or to prevent them from gradually dividing. This is done differently depending on the stage of cancer. The drugs can be taken orally or injected into the bloodstream to get into contact with the cancer cells in the body.
It’s the removal of cancer cell from the body. This type of treatment may sometimes leave some cancer cells after the surgery and thus many patients who undergo surgery later go for chemotherapy and radiation therapy to destroy the remaining cancer cells. The advanced technology has over brought the transoral robotic surgery that will be able to remove the cancer cells in the hidden places which the surgeon is not able to see.
It’s the use of radiation to destroy the cancer cells. Three types of radiation therapy include:
Intensity-modulated therapy-this involves using a computer to determine the size and shape of the tumor. Stereotactic body radiation therapy-special equipment is used where a patient is placed in the same position for the treatment with the purpose of offering more radiation to the tumor but without damaging the other tissues. Internal radiation therapy-this involves placing needles or catheters with radioactive substance around the cancer cells.
Monoclonal antibody therapy
It’s the use of antibodies. These antibodies can know the cancer cells and then attach themselves to it hence destroying it. Drugs or radioactive substances can accompany them.
If diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer, it is essential to undergo the oropharyngeal cancer treatment before the cancer cells divide and be in a stage that is hard to treat.
